The Lower Crane Valley is a linked network of open spaces along the River Crane. These open spaces include areas of grassland, heathland, wetland, woodland and scrub and provide an important corridor for wildlife. The area has a rich industrial and archaeological history. There are places to explore, play, exercise and learn in, plus playgrounds for children to enjoy. Mereway Nature Park is a small area of mixed bramble scrub, woodland and meadow. It is located at the divergence of the River Crane and the Duke of Northumberland's River, where there is a large weir which controls the flow between the two rivers. There is an outdoor classroom for use by schools and the adjacent Kneller Gardens has refreshment facilities and public toilets.
